Think Pink: Watermelon juice fixes for face, lips, skin and hair

Glow Recipe co-founders Sarah Lee and Christine Chang can just thank their grandmothers for inspiring them to create no fewer than nine watermelon spike embellishments. While young women apparently needed hydration, their grandmothers rubbed their sprouts with fruit peels, instilling a lifelong love of this ingredient.

Today, Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow product line is packed with everything from the Pink Dream Ultra-Fine Mist and Body Cream to the PHA + BHA Pore Tightening Toner. For two of the products in Watermelon Glow’s lineup—AHA Night Treatment and Niacinamide Dew Drops—one of each is sold globally every 12 seconds.

“Watermelon is a great hydrating ingredient without being too heavy or pore-clogging, which makes it suitable for all skin types,” says Lee. “The watermelon extract in Glow Recipe products hydrates, delivers essential vitamins and amino acids, and visibly brightens skin.”

From face masks (Bliss What A Melon Reviving & Destressing Overnight Mask), to a make-up sealer (Urban Decay All Nighter Hyaluronic Acid + Watermelon Extract Setting Spray) and an elegant scent, relaxation in a bottle (Badgley Mischka Château Vizcaya), watermelon is finding its way into all aspects of beauty.

And as with Glow Recipe’s battalion of watermelon workhorses, there’s also a family connection behind Bella Skin Beauty’s Probiotic Underarm Toner.

The organic beauty brand, co-founded by mother-daughter duo Diana Schneider and Alex Bella, used the latter’s experience as a sports-obsessed teenager to develop the popular problem-solver.

“Alex had a big problem with sweat and smell growing up,” says Schneider. “She played junior professional tennis, and dealing with deodorants and antiperspirants that didn’t work was extremely frustrating.”

Using double applications to keep the smell at bay, Alex developed irritation and itching from the build-up of bacteria. That’s when the proverbial aha moment struck. “I thought, if people have a problem with hundreds of deodorants, maybe it’s not the deodorant,” says Schneider. “Maybe it’s the way we use it.”

Enter the patented underarm toner, which is layered under the deodorant, traps bacteria and, according to Schneider, benefits everyone. “People sweat and smell for different reasons,” she says. “It could be hormonal, stress-related, menopause, postpartum, detoxification. We always have something going on that will cause our bodies to sweat and smell.”

Blessed with powerful anti-bacterial properties that naturally block odor, watermelon was a stumbling block for the innovative confidence builder, says Schneider. “It was our first OG fragrance.”
